New Toy

We are going to Dominican Republic next week, so I bought a waterproof digital camera, Olympus Stylus 790 SW. According to reviews online, it is a mediocre camera except for its shockproof and waterproof abilities, but I realized that its super-macro mode is excellent, so I played with it. Kind of cool to capture even details like my wife's fingerprints. I'm looking forward to shooting fish under the ocean.

Yamagata

From October 4 till 11, I attended Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. To be honest, this is the first time for me to go to Yamagata, which surprised many people because most people are repeaters.

The jobs I had to do there were very limited. I did a lecture on "how to sell your doc abroad," did a Q&A after a screening of CAMPAIGN, and joined a lecture by a renowned sociologist Shinji Miyadai as a guest speaker. Other than that, all I had to do was to watch movies, chat with friends and colleagues until early morning, and jump in to hot springs in Zao. It was a luxurious week.

There were four movies I was deeply impressed. The first one was called MT. ZAO (1935) by Koji Tsukamoto. All he shot was that people climbed the mountain and went down the slopes skiing, but it was so thrilling and beautiful. Movies do not have to be complicated. The B&W photography was just superb. I wonder if that much snow in winter is still there in this age of global warming.

The second one was LUBRICATING OIL (1960) by Shinji Takeuchi. It is a short film made as a PR film for an oil company, but the colors, compositions, and sounds are just incredibly beautiful. It is a critique of modern civilization from a point of view of lubricating oil. I've never projected myself onto oil before. It's is so amazing to learn that such a powerful masterpiece was made as a corporate film.

The third one was AN ENGINEER'S ASSISTANT (1963) by Tsuchimoto Noriaki. It's embarrassing to say that I saw his film for the first time. I entered the documentary world after I moved to New York, so I had never had a chance to see Japanese old masterpieces. And when I saw it, I was blown away. This is certainly a masterpiece. It was also shot as a propaganda film for Japan Railroad to show how safe their trains are, but it captures the train running like a beautiful animal. The intricate details of dynamic works by train's staff are really powerful and cinematic. I just loved it.

The fourth film was PAPER CANNOT WRAP UP EMBERS (2006) by Rithy Panh. It is a direct cinema which shows the daily lives and monologues-like dialogues by prostitutes in Phnom Penh. I had no idea how the director shot it and how he got the permission to shoot. The shots are beautifully composed and edited. I didn't understand why this didn't get any awards even if it was in the competition.

Anyway, the week in Yamagata was very enjoyable. I'd like to come back here in 2009 hopefully with my new movie.

Guardian Review

Guardian reviewed CAMPAIGN! THE KAWASAKI CANDIDATE aired on BBC as a part of Why Democracy? series.

***

Campaign! The Kawasaki Candidate (BBC4) was an impertinent delight. Kazuhiko Yamauchi was selling stamps when he was parachuted into Kawasaki City as the Liberal Democrat candidate. Not to be confused with the Democratic candidate, though both, you observe, plume themselves on their democratic credentials. Yamauchi was clear on two points: his name ("Repeat it every three seconds!") and the necessity of reform ("I'm for reform!"). On one unproductive night, he gave the smiling figure of Colonel Sanders his leaflet saying, "I'll advance reform." Reform of what, we know not.

"My plan was to become famous first, then run for office," he confided wistfully to college friends. "Celebrities do well." Being a nonenity, he was alternately snubbed and bullied by party officials. His wife, however, reacted to being bullied with some brio. They had one of those in-the-car conversations. Well, monologues, really.

"Someone told me I should give up my job. So I said, 'What if we lose? We'd both be out of a job.' Then they said 'Don't think about losing.' I nearly said, 'I'll quit my job when my husband's prime minister.' I tell you, right now, if we lose here, we'll be totally broke. And they're ignoring my human rights. It's so backward to tell me to be quiet! It's your fault! If you weren't so weak they wouldn't talk to me like that."

"Just pretend to listen," said Kazuhiko Yamauchi, who was just pretending to listen.

Sato Makoto Memorial

On September 26, I attended a memorial of Sato Makoto, a renowned documentary filmmaker who suddenly passed away this month at the age of 49. The memorial was filled with so many people, especially from the Japanese movie industry. It was comforting for me to talk about Sato-san with people who know him. I was glad to be there. I even met some new people. Sato-san connects people, even after his death.

In the train to Ashikaga, I read his first book NICHIJO TOIU NANO KAGGAMI which I bought in Jimbo-cho in Tokyo. This book is so interesting. Sato-san's thoughts and philosophy stimulates my heart and brain even now. His body is certainly dead, but his works, his spirit is very much alive.

Nature

When I return to my home town, Ashikaga, I take a walk every morning. Because it's been so hot every day since I returned, I felt that the season remained as the mid-summer, but if you look closely, you see many signs of the arrival of fall - red dragonflies, cluster-amaryllis, cosmoses, etc. The nature is still functioning despite the serious and continuous abuse it takes from human beings. I feel grateful. I wish the descendants of the meditating frog on the amaryllis will still enjoy their lives in the next year, the following year, and 100 years from now. I wonder what we should and should not do to realize that.

A discussion with Kawase-san

On Sept 19, I met Naomi Kawase (MOGARI NO MORI) to have a discussion on documentary. It will be transcribed on GENDAI SHISO magazine to be published in early October.

At a meeting right before the discussion, I was astonished to hear Mr. O, an editor of the magazine say "the article will probably be about 30,000 words." 30,000 words?! That's a book, not an article. Amazing. Mr. O also showed me the line-up of the people who are contributing to this issue, which included almost every important figure in the Japanese documentary world. This is a must buy, really. In the line-up of essays, I found the name of Makoto Sato (LIVING ON THE RIVER AGANO) who suddenly passed away last month. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the last thing he wrote...

Anyway, Kawase-san wore a beautiful kimono. When taking pictures together, she made me laugh saying "Soda-san, people might misunderstand that you are having fun at a bar in Ginza." Her background, way of thinking, and approach to documentary, are quite the opposite of mine, but at the same time, I felt that the we shared the same philosophy toward filmmaking in a profound way. It was quote deep. The magazine will transcribe almost everything we said in an hour and a half discussion. I wish we had more time, though. She said she's coming to Yamagata Film Festival, so hopefully, we'll continue our talk there...

Toronto トロント

 WHY DEMOCRACY?
WHY DEMMOCRACY?

On Sept 14th, I went to Toronto for the promotion of WHY DEMOCRACY? It was a one day trip because it takes only about an hour and a half from NY to Toronto by air, and also because I am flying to Tokyo on 16th.

As soon as I arrived in Toronto, I was interviewed by CBC, Canada's public TV/Radio network. Since CBC will air WHY DEMOCRACY? (which includes my film CAMPAIGN! THE KAWASAKI CANDIDATE), they are making a half hour promo. In WHY DEMOCRACY?, 10 questions are attached to 10 documentary films they are showing, so I was ask to answer these questions in the interview. Here are some of my answers:

Q: Who would you vote for as President of the World? A: The Dalai Lama!
Q: Can terrorism destroy democracy? A: Yes, but I'm more worried about the "War on Terror" because it can really destroy democracy.
Q: Are dictators ever good? A: No. Even if a great person becomes a dictator, he/she would definitely get corrupted if there's no criticism or the possibilities of change of government.
Q: Is democracy good for everyone? A: No, it's bad for dictators.
Q: Why bother to vote? A: Because politics can affect my life and well being tremendously.
Q: Can politicians solve climate change?: A: I hope so, otherwise, we'll be extinct.

They also interviewed Nick Fraser of BBC and Mette Hoffman Meyer of TV2 who started and run this huge project. After the interview, we all headed to Toronto Film Festival where we had a panel discussion on WHY DEMOCRACY? Actually, only Nick and Metter were supposed to be on stage, but I also spoke briefly as a guest. The moderator was Thom Powers, documentary programmer of the festival, whom I met in New York before.

Because I had to catch my airplane at 6:15, I left the panel in the middle. It was a very brief visit to Toronto, but very much worthwhile.

Forever

 Hot Docs

FOREVER by a renowned documentary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann is now playing at New York City's Film Forum. I saw this masterpiece at Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto, and I was deeply moved, to say the least. The premise cannot be more simple - the filmmaker interviews some people who visit Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. But the result is just incredible, and it's hard to analyze why it touches you.

Right after I saw it in Toronto, I met Heddy and told her that it was worthwhile to come to Toronto because I was able to watch FOREVER. Listening to my very honest feeling, Heddy had some tears in her eyes, which touched me even more. I recommend everybody to see this remarkable film.

London

WHY DEMOCRACY? WHY DEMOCRACY? http://www.whydemocracy.net/home
http://moviessearch.yahoo.co.jp/detail/tymv/id325999/

I visited London from September 5th until 8th in order to attend the launch event of WHY DEMOCRACY? series on BBC. 38 broadcasters in 200 countries will air this WHY DEMOCRACY? series which consist of 10 feature documentaries (including my CAMPAIGN) and 22 shorts.
http://www.whydemocracy.net/home

The idea of this huge media event came from BBC's legendary producer Nick Fraser who also "discovered" my newly completed CAMPAIGN at IFP Market in New York about a year ago. I remember I suddenly received a phone call from Nick about 2 weeks after the market. He said he wanted to show CAMPAIGN in 23 countries (it was ONLY 23 countries, back then). He also told me that he laughed so hard that he fell out of the chair when he saw CAMPAIGN on DVD screener for the first time. I was quite astonished and thankful that he was offering such a huge deal to me without knowing me personally. I also thought that he must be incredibly self-confident and powerful if he could decide such a thing only by watching my movie. So, to see him again in London was such a pleasure. He thinks Yama-san is like Mr. Bean, and seemed to enjoy hearing from me about what's happening to Yama-san these days.

I met other directors in the series, too. They were Karsten Kjaer from Denmark and Alex Gibney from New York. Alex is very well-known especially for his oscar nominated ENRON: SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM. While chatting with him, I was surprised that he knew so much about Japan, and even more surprised that he once interviewed Beate Sirota Gordon who wrote women's rights article in the draft of Japanese constitution right after the WWII. I once made a documentary on Beate, too, so we talked a lot about her and about Japanese constitution. I never dreamed that I would talk about Beate with Alex. And he was so knowledgeable, intelligent, and funny!

CAMPAIGN returns to Berlin 『

To kick off the broadcast of WHY DEMOCRACY? series on ZDF/Arte in Germany, CAMPAIGN will return to Berlin! What's more amazing is that the theater in which CAMPAIGN will be shown is Kino Arsenal, the very theater CAMPAIGN was screened as a part of Berlin Film Festival in February.

As I wrote before, WHY DEMOCRACY? series will air 52 minute version of CAMPAIGN (CAMPAIGN ! THE KAWASAKI CANDIDATE), but Kino Arsenal will play its 120 minute original version.

It will be on Thusday, September 6th at 19:00, and Sunday September 9th at 21:00. I might be going to Q&A on Sunday.

British Empire

「CAMPAIGN! The Kawasaki Candidate」。
http://www.whydemocracy.net/home

52 minute version of CAMPAIGN has been finally completed. As I wrote before, I edited this version so that it will be aired all over the world as a part of the WHY DEMOCRACY? series. It was tough to cut the original 120 minute version down to less than a half. Sometimes, it seemed just impossible. But after many revisions, it's finally done.

To differentiate it from its original theatrical version, we decided to give it a slightly different title. We discussed it for a long time, and at last, it has been determined to be "CAMPAIGN! The Kawasaki Candidate." I wasn't sure it I liked this title too much, but I wanted to respect the opinion of executive producers who gave me a total control on the content of the 52 minutes. So, it's official. However, I insisted that the Japanese title should not be a direct translation of the English title, and it became "SENKYO Nippon no minshu-shugi" or "CAMPAIGN: Japanese Democracy."

I've been told that this version will be watched by 1.5 million people at least because it will be aired in 25 countries on 25 broadcasters, such as BBC, ARTE, ZDF, TV2, CBC, etc... But all of a sudden, I learned that it increased its list to 200 countries! It's simply because BBC World decided to air it. But there are only about 190 countries that are the members of the United Nations. You cannot underestimate the power of the British Empire.

Anyway, CAMPAIGN! The Kawasaki Candidate will be aired in this coming October. WHY DEMOCRACY? series consists of 10 feature length documentaries including mine.

To the sea

All of a sudden, I realized that the summer is almost over, so I and my wife Kiyoko went to a beach. It is the Fire Islands, two and a half hours trip from New York City by trains and a ferry. We found wild deers walking around.

There are many movies and novels which have scenes at beaches, but to me, KOKORO (1914) by Soseki Natsume comes to my mind first when I think of the sea. In the first scene of KOKORO, "I" met "Sensei" at a beach of Kamakura, Japan. I felt I was traveling time and space by reading KOKORO at a beach that is hundreds of miles and 93 years away from Soseki's Kamakura.

It was a one day trip, but I felt quite refreshed.

Back in NY

I'm back in New York from Seoul. Since it takes only 2 hours to fly from Seoul to Tokyo, it was tempting to stop by, but I just flew to NY directly because I've been moving around too much lately.

The first edition of Cinema Digital Film Festival was GREAT, to say the least. Movie selections and guests were fantastic, Korean food was delicious even though it wasn't exactly vegetarian friendly. Moreover, I was deeply impressed with Korean people's hospitality - each guest was supported by a volunteer who speaks your language, in my case, Japanese. My volunteer was a 22-year-old collage student who speaks fluent Japanese. She was funny, warm and smart. She even picked Yama-san up from the airport when he decided to come to Seoul at the very very last minute. Thank you!

When I returned to New York, the national election of the Upper House was going on in Japan. In the end, the Liberal Democratic Party took a huge loss. The Democratic Party became the ruling party of the House for the first time in history. Amazing.

The cartoon below was a present from a famous Korean cartoonist. He watched all the films in the competition and drew a piece on evert single one. I just loved it.

Seoul and J-pop ソウルとJ-Pop

To Seoul

Tonight, I'm leaving NY for Seoul, South Korea to attend Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival (CinDi 2007), a brand new fest starting from this year. This would be my fist visit to Korea. I'm looking forward to it!

July 26(Thur) 16:00 w/Q&A 質疑応答あり

It was tough!

Yesterday, CAMPAIGN was screened in New York City for the first time as a part of a film festival. Many friends came (Thank you!), which made me so happy, but because of that, I felt even more painful that the condition of the projection was far from the ideal.

It was tough because they converted a party room with large windows to a tentative screening room. Even with heavy curtains, the room didn't become dark enough. As a result, black and colors were totally washed out. Images looked cheap and had no depth. A movie needs darkness to be a movie.

In addition to this, the projector refused to be adjusted to a wide screen mode, and the whole movie was presented in a squeezed 4:3 mode. This totally ruined my compositions. I felt really sorry and ashamed that people paid to see this. Even if you spent years to make your movie perfect, it could be ruined in the very last phase - presentation. It's scary. Last night, I woke up a few times because of nightmares.

Even in this condition, however, New York audience was warm and responsive (thanks again!). They seemed to enjoy the movie laughing pretty hard from time to time. Q&A after the screening was fun, and many of my friends tried to cheer me up saying "Don't worry, nobody didn't really care about the compositions or colors. We enjoyed the movie." Maybe they were right, and I really appreciate what they say, but still, I didn't feel OK. I care about compositions and colors, indeed.

I feel grateful and honored that the festival invited CAMPAIGN. And this festival is very important to New York. And that is precisely the reason that I want them to improve the environment in which they show movies.

Lisette and me リゼットと僕

As CAMPAIGN's NY premiere at Asian American International Film Festival fast approaching, their magazine Cinevue published interviews between me and my old friend/filmmaker Lisette Marie Flanary. I first met her when I just moved to New York 14 years ago and worked on her student film KILL KIMONO. She is showing her beautiful documentary on dance, NA KAMALEI: THE MEN OF HULA at AAIFF (My wife Kiyoko Kashiwagi, who's a dancer/choreographer cried watching this movie, by the way). Cinevue paired us up without knowing we are friends! So, please enjoy our conversations.

Oversea Vote

Today, I went to the Consulate-General of Japan to vote for the House of Councilors election. We were not able to vote for elections from foreign countries at all until only several years ago - year 2000. For a long time, our right to vote had been denied only because we lived abroad. And even after 2000, we were able to vote only for "proportional representation" elections, which was ruled by the Supreme Court to be unconstitutional. And finally from this year, we can now vote for "district" elections as well. It's quite upsetting that this simple thing had not been realized for such a long time. And I really demand that law makers should change the laws to let us also vote for local elections from overseas.

When you vote from overseas, naturally, you do so without seeing election cars with loud speakers, candidates with name sashes, nor election posters with smiling faces- the part of familiar landscape during the election seasons in Japan. So, how did I choose which candidate/party to vote for? I simply checked their websites, blogs, and read their platforms, googling quite a bit. It wasn't difficult to make up my mind. I didn't miss these election cars or posters at all which use huge amount of tax payer's money. I really doubt they are necessary. (Pictures below: my "Certificate of Oversea Vote Registration" All the elections I voted for from overseas are recorded in the back.)
