Jet-lag, coffee, and soba

I arrived in Tokyo last night to promote the theatrical release of CAMPAIGN here. Because of Jet-lag, I fell asleep around 8:30 PM last night, and after repeating waking up and falling asleep for countless times, I officially woke up at 5:30 this morning.

I woke up, and wanted a cup of coffee so badly. But the cafe downstairs of the hotel is still closed. I went to a Starbucks nearby only to find out that it wouldn't start until 7. Tokyo does not start up too early! I wondered around the streets of Tokyo in search of a nice cup of coffee, and found myself standing in front of a Fuji Soba restaurant near the Shibuya station. Fuji Soba is a Japanese version of Mac Donald's - a quick, cheap, fast hood franchised restaurant - the only difference is that they serve soba noodles instead of burgers. All of a sudden, I was hungry. I thought it was pathetic, but I entered the store and ate a bowl of very salty seaweed soba and a plate of spinach that seemed to have been boiled 2 hours ago. I don't know how I ended up like this - I thought I wanted to have a cup of coffee!

Returning to the hotel, I found a 24 HR open restaurant called Jonathan's right next to the hotel. I didn't know it was there... The moment I saw Jonathan's, the desire to have coffee became unstoppable. I felt pathetic (again), but I entered the restaurant asking the waiter if I can only have a cup of coffee. But then, I felt hungry again. It's dinner time in NY, after all. It's only natural that I am hungry. I ordered a toast, and ate it. I don't know how I ended up like this (again), but this is the way started my first morning in Tokyo.

Newly Arrived Comments

I've got some new comments on CAMPAIGN, which I'd like to introduce below. English quotes are not the translations of the Japanese. They are totally separate.

Fascinating insight into the inner-workings of the Japanese political machine.
- The New York Times
http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/movie.html?v_id=390941

Campaign is fascinating stuff, with Yamauchi trying to be all things to all people – but it's also hilarious.
- Austin Chronicle
http://austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A456682

Director Kazuhiro, a schoolmate of Yamauchi, tells his story with much affection and respect, and the access provided by his old chum provides a rare view of on-the-ground Japanese politics.
- Sydney Film Festival
http://www.sydneyfilmfestival.org/film_details.asp?id=10&fID=116

Director Kazuhiro Soda, an experienced doc lensman, follows Yamauchi's election to the nail-biting conclusion. But Campaign is also wincingly hilarious, with the harried candidate running around like a man on fire, addressing disinterested commuters and even people sleeping in their homes with his omnipresent P.A. system.
- twitchfilm.net
http://www.twitchfilm.net/archives/009328.html

Campaign is not a movie with a political discourse, but one where the director comes closer to a portrait of contemporary Japanese society, that reflects Japan´s complex essence in detail.

Kazuo Hara & Sachiko Kobayashi

SXSW Film Festival

From March 9th to 13th, we attended SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. When we left New York, the temperature was about 32F, but a few hours later in Austin, it was 80F! America is certainly a big country. And this festival is so American! Everything is casual, optimistic, and relaxed. It's also a party town. We had so much fun.

There were so many parties at SXSW! I don't know how many invitations I've got. Parties are fun, but at the same time, they are places where I should meet new people and talk about business.

The picture below is Matt Dentler, the producer of SXSW. He is only 27 years young, and he is responsible for this huge, important event. Only in America.

I participated a panel discussion entitled "Political Documentary."

Jennie, a journalist from Canada did an interview with me. She really liked CAMPAIGN, and said "I'm going to show you around when you come to Toronto to attend Hot Docs."

I also participated a local TV show called "Austin Movie Show." Its host Jegar was really cool.

A critic from Cape Town, Sarah, was one of the person who really understood and appreciated CAMPAIGN and my intention. Her in-depth interview made me feel that it was worth making this movie.

We filmmakers enjoyed free 15 minute massage services everyday! This was incredibale. Such a great idea. So Austin, in a sense.

By DEREK ELLEY

First feature docu by Gotham-based filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda ("Freezing Sunlight") is a wry, fly-on-the-wall look at local politics, Japanese style -- and in particular, the mighty machine of the country's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. One-man crew Soda follows a former Tokyo U. classmate who stands as an LDP "parachute" candidate in a crucial Kawasaki city council election in Oct. '05. Though it's a half-hour too long, the result is an insightful, ironic portrait of campaigning at street level that's fest- and cable-ready.

Kazuhiko Yamauchi's greatest asset is an ability to keep smiling in the face of public indifference and criticism from his support staff and (in a very polite way) party higher-ups. Sans any kind of political experience, he repeats the same meaningless phrases, puts up with wife Sayuri's private moans about being treated as an ornament and watches his own savings diminish as the campaign wears on. When LDP head Junichiro Koizumi visits to boost the campaign, Yamauchi hardly gets to say hello. HD tech credits are fine; a 60-minute version will be aired by Euro pubcasters in October and a 90-minute one by PBS next year.

Camera (color, HD), Soda. Reviewed at Berlin Film Festival (Forum), Feb. 12, 2007. Japanese dialogue. Running time: 119 MIN.

Great Reviews

by Andreas Platthaus(独「Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung」紙 *ドイツで最も影響力のある全国紙)

by Thomas Sotinel(仏「ルモンド」紙)

by Silvia Hallensleben(独「Der Tagesspiegel」紙)

by Bert Rebhandl(独「Die Tageszeitung」紙)

by Florian Güßgen(独「Stern」誌)

by Christoph Mayerl(Perlentaucher.de)

by Christian Westheide(Festival Blog Berlinale 2007)

by Fabio Fusco(伊「Cinema Zone」)

(Lanacion.com)

While in Berlin, I was interviewed by more than 20 press, and the film was covered by more than 50 news papers, TV segments, radios, and online media. Press screening on Feb 12 was packed and there were people standing. Here are some of the positive reviews by critics.

"A brilliant documentary"
"The sensation of the Berlinale"
"A grandiose introduction to the Japanese mentality"
by Andreas Platthaus, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (The most influential daily news paper in Germany)

"A parody profiling the fascinating personality of its hero"
by Thomas Sotinel, Le Monde, France

"CAMPAIGN is the very best kind of 'Direct Cinema'."
"Despite its tragic protagonist, the Campaign just may be the funniest film in the Forum."
by Silvia Hallensleben, Der Tagesspiege

"Rarely has a film achieved such an intimate view of the political process."
by Bert Rebhandl, Die Tageszeitung

"CAMPAIGN, in 120 entertaining minutes, give us an effortless inside look at 'J-Democracy' (Japanese Democracy)."
by Florian Güßgen, Stern Magazine

"The lack of preparation was a blessing in disguise for this film. The camera is relentlessly close to its subject--nothing is directed."
by Christoph Mayerl, Perlentaucher.de

"CAMPAIGN is a crash course on Japanese politics."
by Christian Westheide, Festival Blog Berlinale 2007

"Soda delivers a ingenious and intense portrait--not only of Japan's election campaign process, but of its culture and society as well.
by Fabio Fusco, Cinema Zone, Italy

"One of those rare treasures that is both frightening and funny at the same time."

Yama-san's speech in Berlin!

On Feb 15, our protagonist Yama-san joined us in Berlin. He arrived at the airport at 9 AM, dropped off his suitcase at the hotel, and came to the Berlin Film Festival's Forum guest house right away. As soon as he showed up, people in the guest house gave a cheer and laughter, which made him a star instantly. Yama-san offered his hands to virtually everybody in the room, handing out his business cards. I heard somebody said "wow, this is just like in the movie!."

Today, Yama-san is planning to make a Japanese style speech in front of the main theater of Berlinale, asking for people's support to our movie CAMPAIGN. My wife, mother, brother and sister-in-law quickly formed a "campaign team," and wore the same yellow jackets and white gloves to prepare for the act. Yama-san brought a red flag and posters he used in the actual election campaign. I prepared my video camera so that I can record the action. I felt as if I was brought back to the time of the shooting which took place a year and a half ago.

At 3:15 PM, Yama-san took his megaphone and started making a speech in Japanese. "Hello everyone. My name is Kazuhiko Yamauchi from a documentary movie CAMPAIGN. Together with you, I'll try to reform documentary movies. Please support Kazuhiko Yamauchi, no, I mean, the documentary movie CAMPAIGN!"

We had a good reason why we decided to start the act at 3:15. We planned to steal all the paparazzi coming out of Jennifer Lopez's press conference scheduled at 2:00 PM. This idea was proposed by our beloved publicist Silke. She is certainly a pro. Because JLo's press conference was delayed, our "shark sucker" strategy didn't really work out, but it's OK. Don't be late the next time, Jennifer!

Anyway, as soon as Yama-san started his speech, people began to gather around him to snap photos. Among them were photographers from AP, Reuters, and TV crew of ARTE. My wife, mother, and sister-in-law handed out postcards to everybody who showed interest. Some people who's already seen the movie asked Yama-san for handshakes. Rolling my video camera, I was enjoying the success of our strange little act. Yama-san also seemed to be enjoying the ride.

World-Premiere at Berlinale

On February 14, CAMPAIGN finally had its world-premiere at Berlin Film Festival. This was the very first screening for public anywhere in the world, so I was a bit worried if people will come out. I was also nervous about the reactions from the audience. It turned out, however, the huge theater was almost packed, and the audience was very responsive. Every time people laughed, I became happier and happier. But they sometimes didn't respond to the scenes I thought was funny, and they responded to the ones I didn't really expect them to do so. This confirmed my belief that you could never predict the audience's reactions. I've seen CAMPAIGN for million times by now, but it was so thrilling that I felt as if I was watching it for the first time. 120 minutes felt like 12 seconds.

TBS, one of the major TV networks in Japan, covered the event and interviewed me and some viewers. As soon as the segment was aired nationally in Japan by TBS's most important news show "NEWS 23," I received many e-mails from friends and strangers. You could never underestimate the power of television! I believe that a movie completes only when it gets seen by the audience, so in this sense, Feb 14 is the real birthday of CAMPAIGN. Too bad it wasn't a romantic comedy!

Red carpet @ Berlinale

On Feb 8, Berlin Film Festival finally started, and I and my wife arrived in Berlin. We suffered some jet lag, but we managed to register with the festival, met many people of Forum, UniJapan, IFP, and did some interviews for a Japanese news paper. We were so busy!!!

But I was a bit shocked when I received an invitation to the opening ceremony which said "Formal." I only had jeans because for some reasons, I didn't even think that this kind of situation might happen. Well, I just decided that these jeans were my formal clothes, and walked on the red carpet carrying some back packs. And I shot some pictures of paparazzi! I was quite amused that they seemed quite puzzled about the strange behavior by an strange Asian guy.

Yama-san will make speeches in the streets of Berlin!

CAMPAIGN (SENKYO)'s world-premiere at Berlin Film Festival is fast approaching. Yama-san is planning to attend the festival, and to make speeches in the streets of Berlin in Japanese wearing a sash using a megaphone - exactly the same syle as in the very first shot of the movie which lasts 4:30 minutes. The schedule of the speeches has not been determined yet, but it will probably be on Feb 15 or 16. Several media are already interested in covering the act. Can Yama-san impress Berliners with his speeches in spite of the language barrier?!
